Also referred to as bandwidth or capacity it’s the amount of data that can travel through your connection and is measured in bits per second (bps). For example, a 5 Gbps network can handle 5 billion/giga bits traveling through it every second. SpletOn most switches the line rate would be the limiting factor. A 1 Gbps ethernet port is only capable of serializing bits onto the wire at the rate of 1 Gbps. From a practical standpoint the limiting factor of a connected PC or server is really higher up the stack.
